Armadillo officinalis "Orange Crush" stands out for its strong orange colour, chunky rolling shape, and the unusual defensive sound that makes this species different from ordinary pill bugs. When disturbed, this Armadillo officinalis morph can roll tightly and produce a faint hissing or stridulating sound, which is one of the main reasons collectors look for it.
This is a Mediterranean / Southern European style species rather than something to treat like a tropical wet-box isopod. In the enclosure, expect sturdy ground movement, regular use of leaf litter and bark cover, and more time around sheltered areas than out on bare open substrate.
"Orange Crush" is usually easier to find under bark, within leaf litter, or along sheltered edges than sitting in full open view for long periods. You may see them moving steadily across the floor, especially when settled, but they still make better use of covered ground than a bare exposed tub.
If the colony is using more than one hide, showing up on both the damp side and the drier covered side, and grazing through the litter over time, the setup is usually on the right track. If everything stays packed into one damp patch, the rest of the enclosure may be too dry, too open, or too stale.
Build the enclosure around a clear moisture gradient: one damp refuge, one drier but still usable area, and plenty of cover across both. A layer of leaf litter should cover much of the surface, while pieces of cork bark give them shaded undersides and sheltered edges to rest against.
This species is better approached with moderate ventilation and fresh air than as a sealed humid setup. Keep the damp area reliably moist below the surface, but leave enough drier ground that the enclosure does not become uniformly wet. A piece of limestone is also worth providing for steady calcium access.
If you are still planning the enclosure, the isopod habitat setup guide gives a broader walkthrough of moisture, cover, and airflow.
The main food base should come from litter, decomposing material, and mature substrate rather than fresh extras alone. Keep leaf litter available at all times, and add rot wood if you want another long-term grazing surface under cover.
Fresh foods can be offered in small amounts, but they should not become the whole feeding strategy. This species usually makes more sense when the enclosure itself is doing most of the feeding work.
This morph suits buyers who want a roller with stronger visual impact than a plain wild-type look, and who appreciate unusual defensive behaviour as part of the appeal. It is especially interesting for keepers who like watching how isopods use bark, litter, and covered floor space rather than expecting nonstop open display activity.
It may be less satisfying if your main goal is constant surface visibility, or if your usual setup style is either very bare and dry or uniformly wet.
If you want to stay within the same species group, Armadillo officinalis Orange is the closest colour-led comparison, while Armadillo officinalis "Tamarix" is another useful Armadillo officinalis option to compare for look and collection preference.
