What a millipede enclosure needs


The core of any millipede setup is a deep, organic substrate. A thin decorative layer is not enough. Millipedes need enough depth to burrow and hide, and they rely on decomposing plant matter as part of their long-term habitat.



  • a secure enclosure with enough floor space for the species and number being kept

  • a deep substrate made from suitable organic material

  • leaf litter and decomposed wood on and through the substrate

  • steady moisture that keeps the lower layers damp, not waterlogged

  • ventilation that prevents stale air without drying the enclosure out

  • simple hides or bark pieces for surface cover


Some keepers also add moss, cork bark and similar natural décor, but these should support the setup rather than replace the substrate. Species choice also matters, because different millipedes need different amounts of depth and space.



How to set it up


Build the enclosure from the ground up. Start with a substrate that feels like a woodland floor rather than inert bedding. The lower layers should be loose, moist and rich in organic matter so the millipedes can burrow and stay in a stable moisture zone.


Depth is important because millipedes use the substrate for rest, moulting and retreating underground. If the layer is too shallow, the enclosure may look tidy but it will not function properly. As a general rule, make the substrate deeper than you think you need, while still keeping the enclosure practical for the species.


Add a generous layer of leaf litter on top. This helps slow moisture loss, gives the millipedes a natural surface to move through and feeds the breakdown process below. Rotting wood is also useful because it adds long-term value to the habitat and helps the substrate behave more like a real forest floor.


Moisture should be steady rather than extreme. The lower layers should stay evenly damp, but never sour, sticky or waterlogged. If the substrate dries out beneath the surface, it is too dry. If it smells unpleasant or feels muddy, there is too much moisture or not enough airflow.

  • improve as it matures

What to check before use


Before adding millipedes, check that the substrate has settled and is ready to hold moisture properly. It should be evenly damp and free from obvious problems. If it smells sour, feels slimy or looks dry and dusty underneath, it needs attention first.
