Millipedes usually cannot climb smooth glass or plastic well, but an enclosure is not automatically escape-proof. Textured surfaces, décor, condensation and small gaps can still give them enough grip to get higher than expected.



Why millipedes struggle on smooth glass or plastic


Millipedes are ground-dwelling animals adapted for moving through soil, leaf litter and decaying wood, not for clinging to smooth vertical walls. On clean, dry glass or plain plastic, they usually have poor grip and struggle to climb with confidence.



That changes if the surface is not completely smooth. Light texture, scratches, moulded plastic, moisture or dirt can all make climbing easier. Cork bark, wood and other décor can also act as a route upward, even if the walls themselves are difficult to scale.

In a well-set-up enclosure, millipedes are usually more interested in the substrate than the walls. Even so, they may climb onto bark, plants or other décor while feeding, exploring or moving around after disturbance.



That means the practical question is not just whether glass or plastic is smooth enough. It is whether the whole enclosure gives the millipede a way to reach the top or slip out. A tall tank with a loose lid can be less secure than a shorter enclosure with a tight-fitting top. What repeated wall-climbing can mean


A millipede that occasionally appears above the substrate is not necessarily trying to escape. Surface activity can be normal, especially at night or in humid conditions. What matters more is repeated climbing high up the sides.

  • substrate that is too shallow

  • the enclosure being too dry or too wet for the species

  • too little leaf litter or cover

  • decor arranged too close to the lid

If you keep millipedes in glass or plastic, the safest approach is to focus on the lid, joins and fittings rather than the wall material alone.




  • use a tight-fitting lid with no obvious gaps

  • keep cables and accessories properly sealed or covered

  • avoid placing bark, wood or décor directly against the lid

  • check corners, ventilation slots and joins regularly

  • maintain enough substrate depth for the animals to stay grounded



So, can millipedes climb glass or plastic? Usually not well on smooth, clean vertical surfaces - but they can still use texture, décor or small gaps to get where they should not be. For most keepers, the real priority is a secure enclosure with deep substrate, suitable moisture, sensible ventilation and a properly fitting lid.
