A millipede enclosure should be set up as a stable woodland-floor habitat: deep substrate, plenty of leaf litter, secure shelter, balanced moisture and good ventilation. Millipedes live in and under the substrate, so the enclosure has to work as habitat first and display second.

What a millipede enclosure needs

Millipedes do best in an enclosure built around substrate depth. A thin layer may look neat, but it does not give them the space they need for burrowing, resting and moulting. Treat the substrate as the habitat itself, not just the floor covering.

Before you set the enclosure up, have the main components ready:

  • deep, organic substrate suitable for millipedes
  • leaf litter and decomposed plant material
  • rotting wood or other mature organic matter
  • bark, cork or similar hides for cover
  • a way to keep moisture steady without making the enclosure waterlogged

Leaf litter and decaying organic matter are not decorative extras. They help form the woodland-floor environment millipedes use for cover, feeding and long-term stability.

Put the setup together

Start with the substrate, since this is the foundation of the enclosure. It should be loose, organic and deep enough to support burrowing. The lower layers need to hold moisture well, but the substrate should not feel muddy or compacted.

Build the enclosure up as a layered woodland floor. The substrate provides the base, leaf litter sits on top, and rotting wood adds extra organic matter as it breaks down. This is why many keepers let a millipede enclosure mature rather than expecting it to be fully settled straight away.

Add leaf litter generously across the surface, then place bark, cork or other hides where they will create sheltered areas underneath. These spaces help the enclosure stay humid in the right places and give the millipede options above and below the substrate.

Check the conditions

Moisture is one of the most important parts of the setup. Aim for a damp lower layer with a drier surface in some areas, rather than saturating the whole enclosure. A good millipede enclosure usually has a moisture gradient, so the animal can choose between wetter refuge areas and slightly drier cover.

When checking a new setup, look for these signs:

  • the substrate feels soft and workable below the surface
  • leaf litter begins to break down gradually
  • the enclosure smells earthy rather than sour
  • the millipede can use cover and substrate freely
  • the lower layers stay moist while the surface is not constantly wet

If the substrate feels dusty, hard, muddy or sour, the balance needs adjusting.

What to adjust over time

A millipede enclosure will change as the substrate matures and the organic material breaks down. Top up leaf litter regularly so the surface stays protected and the habitat keeps hold of moisture. If the enclosure is drying too fast, reduce airflow slightly, add more cover or re-wet part of the substrate carefully. If it is staying too wet, improve ventilation and reassess how much water is being added.

Watch where the millipede spends its time. Repeatedly clustering in one damp corner, avoiding the rest of the enclosure or staying under the same hide can all suggest that the moisture balance, cover or substrate depth needs attention.

Keep the setup focused on function: deep substrate, plenty of organic matter, secure shelter and moisture that stays steady. Those are the parts that make the enclosure work.
