UV Glow Millipedes

Despite the name, these millipedes do not create their own light. What Are UV Glow Millipedes?

UV-responsive millipedes contain structures or compounds that fluoresce when exposed to ultraviolet light. Depending on the species, individual animal and viewing conditions, the reaction may appear blue, turquoise or blue-green.

The strength and appearance of the fluorescence can vary, so product photographs should be treated as a guide rather than a guarantee that every animal will look identical. The type of UV light, viewing angle and surrounding lighting can all affect what you see.

Choosing a UV-Reactive Millipede

When comparing UV glow millipedes, consider both their appearance under ordinary light and their fluorescent response. Named lines such as Maui, Siamese and Khao Sok can differ in body shape, colour, markings and overall appearance, so the UV effect should be one part of the decision rather than the only reason for choosing them.

Check the individual product page for information about adult size, origin, behaviour and care requirements. Some millipedes spend more time on the surface, while others naturally burrow and may not always be visible, even when you are using a UV torch.

UV light should be used briefly for observation rather than as permanent enclosure lighting. These millipedes still need a natural day and night cycle and should not be kept under constant UV illumination simply to display their fluorescence.

Care Comes Before the Glow

UV-reactive millipedes have the same fundamental needs as other millipedes. A deep, nutritious substrate, plenty of leaf litter and decaying wood, stable moisture and appropriate airflow are far more important than the novelty of the fluorescent effect.

The substrate is both their habitat and a major part of their diet, so a thin layer of ordinary soil is not enough. The enclosure should be prepared before the millipedes arrive and matched to the needs of the species you choose.
