Millipede breeding and egg laying

In most species, breeding starts with mature adults in an established enclosure. Courtship and mating are often hidden from view, and because millipedes spend so much time below the surface, keepers may never see the process clearly. When breeding is successful, eggs are laid in the substrate rather than left exposed on the surface.

The substrate is therefore central to reproduction. Millipedes depend on it for shelter, egg placement and early development, so a breeding setup should be deep, loose and organic enough to behave like a living woodland floor. That gives adults somewhere to burrow and provides young millipedes with the kind of environment they need between moults.

Juveniles are usually smaller, paler and less developed than adults. As they grow, they add body segments and legs through successive moults, so a colony may include animals at several stages at once. That mixed-age structure is normal and often shows that the enclosure is supporting a natural lifecycle.

Creating the right conditions

Breeding success usually comes from stable, species-appropriate husbandry rather than special tricks. The most important setup factors are deep substrate, consistently moist but not waterlogged conditions and minimal disturbance once the colony is established.

Moisture matters especially for eggs, moulting and young millipedes. The lower substrate layers should stay damp and earthy, not muddy or sour, so the animals can burrow, stay secure and move through the habitat without the enclosure becoming stagnant.

A mature enclosure also benefits from leaf litter, decaying wood where appropriate and other natural organic material that continues to break down over time. Millipedes feed largely from the substrate itself, so a well-settled habitat can become more useful as it matures.

Handling, digging and rehoming should be kept to a minimum. Frequent disturbance can interrupt breeding behaviour and make conditions less suitable for eggs and juveniles. For a breeding colony, it is better to think of the enclosure as a long-term habitat rather than a short-term display.

Realistic colony growth

Colony growth is usually gradual. Even in good conditions, breeding is not something that happens on a fixed schedule, and different species mature, lay eggs and develop at different rates.

Visible juveniles are not guaranteed straight away. Eggs are often buried in the substrate, and young millipedes may remain hidden for long periods, which is normal rather than a sign of failure.

The best way to judge progress is to look at the enclosure as a whole. A healthy colony usually has earthy-smelling, loosely structured substrate, steady moisture in the lower layers and leaf litter and wood that break down gradually rather than rotting badly or drying out. If the habitat stays stable, that is usually a better sign than how often the animals are seen.

If the enclosure is too dry, compacted or sour, or if millipedes are exposed on the surface because there is not enough depth or shelter, those are signs that the setup needs attention before you can expect strong colony development.

Young millipedes need the same basic conditions as adults, but they are more vulnerable to drying out and disturbance. Deep substrate, stable moisture and a rich supply of natural food resources help them continue developing between moults.

Breeding and moulting are separate events. A millipede may moult many times during growth without breeding, while adults may breed and still remain mostly hidden. Keeping that distinction in mind makes it easier to read normal colony behaviour and avoid overreacting to quiet periods.

If the enclosure is mature, stable and substrate-rich, colony growth is usually more likely to follow naturally. Patience matters, but the strongest indicator of success is a habitat that continues to look and behave like a healthy woodland floor.
