Why millipedes need leaf litter
Leaf litter gives millipedes cover, a feeding surface and a more stable microclimate at the same time. On a natural forest floor, fallen leaves slowly soften, hold moisture and develop fungal and microbial growth. Millipedes are adapted to feed on that decomposing material rather than on fresh leaves alone.
As leaf litter breaks down, it becomes more useful for grazing. That is why older, softened leaves are often better than freshly fallen ones. The decaying plant material, along with the microorganisms growing on it, forms an important part of what millipedes use.
Leaf litter also creates the sheltered spaces millipedes prefer. Many species spend much of their time just below the surface layer, moving under curled leaves and between overlapping layers rather than out in the open.
It also helps buffer moisture. The upper layers may dry slightly while the lower layers stay damper, creating small humidity gradients within the enclosure. That gives millipedes more choice and helps keep the enclosure functionally stable.

The quality of the leaves matters as well. Hardwood leaf litter often lasts longer and gives a more durable surface for gradual grazing, while a mix of leaf types can create a more varied enclosure. Whatever is used, it should be clean and suitable for invertebrate keeping.
