If millipede substrate is too dry, the clearest signs are usually a pale, dusty or crumbly surface, leaf litter that dries out quickly, and deeper layers that feel dry rather than soft and slightly damp. The surface can look acceptable while the lower substrate has already lost the moisture millipedes need for burrowing, resting and moulting. If that is what you are seeing, check below the top layer and rehydrate the enclosure gradually.

Signs millipede substrate is too dry
The easiest signs are visual and behavioural:
- pale or faded substrate
- a dusty surface
- loose, crumbly texture rather than soft, workable substrate
- dry deeper layers, not just a dry top
- light, airy substrate instead of slightly heavy, damp substrate
You may also notice that leaf litter becomes brittle, rotting wood turns hard and lifeless, or the enclosure loses the mild earthy smell of a healthy woodland floor. Millipedes may avoid burrowing deeply, stay under the dampest hides, or cluster in the few moist areas left.
Behaviour can help, but it is not proof on its own. Millipedes may also change where they spend time because of light, temperature, disturbance or normal activity patterns.

Where to start
Check the substrate at depth, not just at the surface. Gently part the top layer in a few places and feel underneath. Healthy millipede substrate should usually feel soft, slightly springy and consistently damp below the surface without becoming muddy or saturated. If the deeper layers feel dry, powdery or hard, the enclosure needs more moisture.
Also consider what is making the enclosure dry out. Ventilation, enclosure depth, leaf litter and cover all affect how quickly moisture is lost. A shallow substrate layer dries much faster than a deep woodland-style base, and an enclosure with a lot of open airflow may need more careful moisture management.

Why millipede substrate dries out
The most common cause is simply time: if moisture is not replaced, the enclosure will gradually dry out, especially in a warm room or a well-ventilated setup. Watering only the surface can also leave the top layer looking fine while the deeper substrate remains dry and unusable.
Drying is often uneven. Heat sources, direct airflow and open-topped enclosures tend to pull moisture from the upper layers first. If the substrate is too shallow, it cannot hold moisture for long. A lack of leaf litter and rotting wood can make the problem worse because those materials help buffer moisture and support the stable woodland-floor conditions millipedes rely on.
Old, compacted or exhausted substrate may also stop holding moisture well. In that case, it may need a more thorough refresh rather than a small top-up.
What to do if the substrate is too dry
Do not flood the enclosure all at once. Dry substrate can appear to absorb water quickly, but heavy soaking often creates wet pockets near the top while leaving the deeper layers uneven. It is better to reintroduce moisture gradually and check the response over time.
Start by lightly dampening one area, then wait and reassess. If the substrate is very dry throughout, add water in stages so it can move down through the layers rather than pooling on the surface. Aim for a stable damp lower zone, not a soggy enclosure.
If possible, gently work moisture into the lower substrate while leaving some drier surface areas and plenty of cover on top. That gives the millipedes choice and helps create a more natural moisture gradient.
Leaf litter, cork bark and rotting wood help trap moisture and slow drying. If these are missing or sparse, adding more can make a noticeable difference. Deeper substrate also helps hold the damp layer millipedes need for burrowing and moulting.
After adjustment, give the enclosure time. The substrate may not look evenly corrected straight away, and that is fine. What matters is whether the deeper layers become soft, workable and consistently damp again without turning swampy.
Keeping the enclosure from drying out too fast
If the substrate keeps drying out quickly, the issue is usually environmental rather than a one-off mistake. Common signs include the surface drying soon after misting, the lower substrate repeatedly feeling dry, leaf litter becoming brittle and the millipedes staying in the same damp patch.
In that case, review ventilation, enclosure depth and the amount of cover in the habitat. Sometimes a small change makes a big difference, such as adding more leaf litter, increasing substrate depth or reducing the amount of dry air moving across the enclosure.
Millipede substrate works best when the deeper layers stay moist while the top layer can breathe. Check below the surface regularly, especially in warm weather or after changes to ventilation, and adjust moisture in stages rather than all at once.
