Old millipede substrate can be reused only if it is clean, stable and free from contamination. The three things to check first are smell, moisture and texture, and the substrate's history.

When old millipede substrate should be replaced
If the enclosure smells sour, has turned muddy, has dried out through the lower layers, or has developed pests, the old substrate should not be reused. It is only worth keeping when you can rule out contamination, chemical exposure and serious pest problems.
- it has been exposed to cleaning chemicals, sprays or other contaminants
- there has been a serious pest issue such as mites, fungus gnats or other unwanted infestations that could spread
- it smells sour, rotten or unpleasant rather than earthy
- it is waterlogged, sticky or turned to mud
- it has dried out completely through the lower layers
- it contains mouldy, contaminated or unidentified material
If you are unsure whether the substrate is still healthy, it is safer to treat it as unsuitable rather than risk putting your millipedes back into a compromised enclosure.
Where to start
The quickest way to judge old substrate is to look at how it smells, feels and what it has been through. Healthy substrate should usually smell earthy, hold moisture in the lower layers, and still have a loose, workable texture rather than becoming soupy, compacted or dust-dry. Its history matters just as much: substrate that has been contaminated, overheated, repeatedly flooded or exposed to chemicals should not be reused.
Some ageing is normal. Leaf litter breaks down, rotting wood softens, and the substrate often becomes darker and more compacted over time. That does not automatically make it unusable. Mature substrate can be worth keeping when it is still stable and functioning properly.
Reusable substrate also needs to retain structure. Millipedes need depth for burrowing, resting and moulting, so if the layers have collapsed to the point that they no longer provide usable habitat, the enclosure may need rebuilding even if the material is not obviously dirty.
In many cases, the best answer is a partial refresh rather than a full reset. Keeping some of the old substrate and mixing it with fresh material can preserve the settled, mature structure of the enclosure while restoring depth, food value and moisture balance. What makes old substrate reusable?
Reusable substrate usually has a few things in common. It smells earthy rather than sour. It still holds moisture in the lower layers. It contains decomposing leaves, wood or other organic matter. It is neither dusty nor soupy. And it has not been exposed to anything that could harm your millipedes.
That final point matters more than many keepers expect. Substrate can look perfectly fine and still be unsuitable if it has been in contact with pesticides, household cleaners, scented products or contaminated décor. Millipedes live in close contact with the substrate, so probably okay is not a good enough standard when there is any risk of exposure.
When a refresh is better than a full replacement
If the substrate is broadly healthy but depleted, a refresh is often the best option. That might mean removing only the most exhausted upper layers, topping up with fresh organic material, and adding more leaf litter and rotting wood so the enclosure can keep working as a natural woodland floor.

When to throw old substrate away
There are times when reusing substrate is not worth the risk. If the enclosure has been contaminated, affected by chemicals or badly overrun with pests, the safest option is to discard the substrate and clean the enclosure thoroughly before rebuilding it.
It is also sensible to start fresh if the substrate has collapsed into compacted, anaerobic material. Once the lower layers lose airflow and begin to turn sour, the enclosure no longer resembles the stable, breathable habitat millipedes need. Trying to rescue severely degraded substrate can take more time than rebuilding it properly.
Likewise, if you do not know the substrate's full history, caution is wise. Old substrate from an unknown source may have been exposed to treatments, unsuitable materials or poor maintenance before it ever reached your enclosure.
How to judge substrate quality at a glance
If you are standing in front of an enclosure and trying to decide what to do, a few simple observations can help:
- Smell: Healthy substrate should smell earthy. Sour or rotten smells are a bad sign.
- Texture: It should be loose or workable, not mud-like or hard and dry.
- Moisture: The lower layers should stay damp without becoming waterlogged.
- Organic matter: Leaf litter and rotting wood should still be present and actively breaking down.
- History: Any chemical exposure, pest outbreak or contamination should rule out reuse.
These checks will not tell you everything, but they are a good way to separate a mature, functioning substrate from one that simply looks dark and old.
For the long term
Millipede substrate works best when it is treated as part of a living habitat. The goal is not to keep it looking new for as long as possible, but to maintain a stable, organic woodland floor that can support burrowing, feeding and natural behaviour over time.
If the substrate is clean and stable, partial reuse or a careful refresh can be the right choice.
