Millipede mating is a species-specific courtship process followed by sperm transfer using the male's gonopods. Seeing two millipedes together does not automatically mean breeding has succeeded, and enclosure conditions often determine whether mating leads to eggs and colony development.

In practice, keepers need to know both what mating looks like and how to tell it apart from ordinary pairing, sheltering or contact in the enclosure. A successful breeding setup depends on mature adults and a habitat that allows natural behaviour.

How millipede mating works

Millipede mating varies from species to species, but the basic principle is the same: the male transfers sperm using modified legs called gonopods. These are reproductive structures, not walking legs, and they are central to how millipedes breed.

Before sperm transfer, many species show courtship behaviour. This may include the pair aligning their bodies, following each other, touching with their antennae or remaining in contact for a period before separating. In some species this is subtle; in others it is more obvious. Either way, mating is usually a sequence of behaviours rather than a simple brief encounter.

That is why a sighting of two millipedes coiled together, side by side or moving closely through the substrate is not proof of breeding. It may be normal interaction, sheltering or a temporary pairing. Even when mating does occur, it does not guarantee fertilisation or egg laying.

Conditions that support success

Breeding is most likely when the enclosure matches the millipedes' natural needs: deep substrate, steady moisture, plenty of organic material and low disturbance. Millipedes live in leaf litter, soil and decaying wood, so a shallow or bare setup is unlikely to support reliable reproduction.

A colony also needs privacy. Many species spend much of their time buried or hidden under wood and leaf litter, and that undisturbed environment helps them settle, feed and mate. Frequent digging, handling or rearranging can interrupt those behaviours.

Moisture matters too. The aim is usually a consistently damp, well-structured substrate with some variation in moisture so the animals can choose what suits them. Good airflow is still important, because enclosure conditions should not become stale or waterlogged.

Food and substrate quality are linked. A rich, naturalistic substrate with leaf litter and decaying wood supports feeding and gives the colony a better chance of producing eggs and juveniles. If conditions are too sparse or dry, adults may remain alive but still fail to develop into a breeding colony.

What to expect over time

After mating, eggs are usually laid in the substrate or another protected area where moisture and food are suitable. They are often hidden from view, so there may be no obvious sign straight away.

For that reason, breeding success is often judged by later colony changes rather than by the mating event itself. You may notice adults becoming settled, then later find very small juveniles in the substrate. In some setups, there may be little to see until the colony is already developing well.

Juveniles need the same broad conditions as adults, but with even more care around humidity, substrate quality and disturbance. They are easy to miss and can be vulnerable during cleaning or enclosure changes, so patience is important.

Development timelines vary by species and by husbandry, so there is no single fixed schedule. The most useful approach is to keep conditions stable and let the colony develop naturally.
