Vietnam Feather Millipede

Brachycybe sp. "Vietnam" is a striking flat-backed millipede with broad feather-like side extensions and a rich blend of warm brown and golden markings. The wide body hides much of the legs beneath the edges of each segment, creating a smooth, gliding appearance that can make it seem almost as though it is floating across the leaf litter.

This is a wild-caught millipede that is allowed time to settle in captivity before sale. During this period it is monitored, encouraged to feed and given the opportunity to recover from transport before being offered for purchase. The trade name should be treated as a practical identification label rather than a confirmed species name or locality record.

Unlike the cylindrical giant millipedes, this species is chosen for its distinctive outline. The broad flattened body and feathered profile give it a very different appearance, while the warm brown and golden pattern provides natural camouflage amongst bark, leaf litter and decaying wood.

A mature enclosure with deep organic substrate, leaf litter, decaying wood and plenty of sheltered cover provides the best foundation for this species. A dependable damp refuge alongside slightly drier areas and good airflow helps create stable woodland-floor conditions. As with other millipedes, the substrate is an important part of both the habitat and the food source.

Like many woodland millipedes, the Vietnam Feather Millipede may spend periods beneath cover or within the substrate before emerging to explore. Rather than expecting constant visibility, it is best appreciated for the moments when its unusual silhouette and flowing movement become visible across the enclosure.
