Armadillidium nahumi Isopods for Sale UK
Armadillidium nahumi stands out for its compact rolling form, tidy Armadillidium shape, and more natural slate-grey look, sometimes finished with paler edging where the line shows it. Rather than the bright contrast of some showier morphs, this species appeals through neat proportions, calm ground-level movement, and the classic ability to roll up when disturbed.
In practice, this is a species for keepers who enjoy readable enclosure behaviour without expecting constant open display. Once settled, it may be seen moving through leaf litter, along bark edges, and between the damp refuge and drier covered areas, but it still wants shelter, airflow, and a proper moisture gradient instead of a sparse or evenly wet tub.
What makes nahumi appealing
- Classic roller behaviour: conglobation is part of its normal defence behaviour and a big part of its appeal.
- Compact silhouette: a tidy, ground-level Armadillidium look rather than a long-bodied or tropical cave-style appearance.
- Natural colour tone: usually better appreciated for slate-grey or muted body colour than for loud contrast.
- Readable enclosure use: often easier to follow than more hidden tropical genera, while still using cover properly.
How they usually behave in the enclosure
Armadillidium nahumi is best judged by where it sits and moves, not by whether it stays fully exposed. A settled colony will often rest under bark, flat hides, or leaf litter during the day, then make use of covered floor space and feeding areas when conditions suit them. They are often more visible than hidden tropical isopods, but they should still be expected to retreat quickly after disturbance.
If they spend all their time compressed into one damp corner, the issue is usually the setup rather than the species being unusually shy. The rest of the enclosure may be too dry, too bare, or too stale for them to use confidently.
Setup that suits this species
Nahumi should be approached as a proper Armadillidium: airy, cover-loving, and best given clear choice. A reliable damp refuge on one side, a drier but still usable side, and plenty of surface shelter will usually work better than keeping the whole enclosure wet.
A strong starting point is a moisture-holding substrate, a generous layer of leaf litter, and bark or cork-style cover such as cork bark so they can rest and move under shelter. The damp area can be buffered with sphagnum moss, while the drier side should still have litter and hides rather than bare open ground. If you need a broader walkthrough on balancing airflow, cover, and moisture, the isopod habitat setup guide is the most useful next read.
Feeding and calcium support
Like other Armadillidium, this species should be kept on a detritus-first food base. Most of the diet should come from leaf litter, decomposing plant matter, and mature enclosure surfaces, with fresh foods offered as extras rather than the foundation.
Consistent mineral access is worth building in from the start. A piece of cuttlebone or another suitable calcium source helps support normal long-term keeping without turning feeding into a rich, messy routine.
Before you order
This species tends to do better when the enclosure is prepared in advance rather than assembled on arrival day. Make sure the colony will have:
- a damp refuge that stays moist below the surface
- a drier side that still has leaf litter and cover
- flat bark, cork, or hides for shaded resting spots
- steady calcium access
- enough airflow to avoid a stale, wet tub
Who tends to enjoy this species most
Nahumi is a good match for keepers who like classic roller behaviour, natural tones, and a species that can be observed without being treated like an always-out display isopod. It may be especially appealing if you want an Armadillidium that feels neat and understated rather than loud or heavily patterned.
It may be less satisfying if you want constant open movement, very bold feeding behaviour, or a species to keep in either a very dry box or a uniformly damp enclosure. This one benefits from balance, not extremes.
